Colors of the Rainbow – Cancer Event

October 8, 2009

Colors of the Rainbow Cancer Event – Wednesday, November 18, 2009

For the past three years the employees of Douglas County Government have hosted a Passionately Pink for the Cure event, a one-day event designed to increase breast cancer awareness. Last year we raised $3534.30 with help from our sponsors, all of which was donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

We have been asked by our colleagues and the community to raise awareness of all cancers. So this year, on Wednesday, November 18, we will be hosting a Colors of the Rainbow Cancer Event.  We are working with the University of Colorado Hospital Foundation to raise money for their Cancer Center Fund. This is a general fund used to support many aspects of the Cancer Center, including: program expenses, equipment, patient financial assistance, and clinical research. Patient financial assistance provides patients with basic items like food, emergency shelter, clothing, groceries, babysitters while they receive their chemo treatment, and transportation services. After a social work assessment, anyone in need can receive help. Most importantly, the funds stay right here in Colorado to benefit our citizens. This facility is accessible through our Aetna health insurance plan.

We know all of us have been touched by cancer in some way. We want this to be an opportunity where we can share stories, obtain information about this terrible disease, and raise funds for a cause that can benefit the citizens of Douglas County as well as us as employees of the County. We will have speakers from CU Hospital and cancer literature available.  We will also have:

  • Our traditional Pretty in Pink contest
  • Survivor/memory boards in which to share cancer stories
  • A bake sale at three locations, dependent on volunteers (we’d like to set them up at the Justice Center and the Wilcox and Miller buildings)
  • A silent auction.
  • Hot Dog Sale at the Miller Building

And we are working on additional events as well!  Like last year a $5 or greater donation will get you a door prize ticket, a Passionately Pink for the Cure pin or a cancer bracelet, and allow you to wear jeans. 100% of the money raised will be donated to the University of Colorado Hospital Foundation Cancer Center Fund.

There are a couple of ways you can contribute to help make the event a success:

  1. Bakers: We are looking for bakers who can contribute items to the bake sale (pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, donuts, etc). If you are interested, please contact msorense@douglas.co.us.
  2. Silent Auction Donations: We are looking for people who can donate goods (new or gently used) or services to our Trash to Treasures Silent Auction. While we are still asking our neighboring business to contribute to our silent auction, we realize with the current economy that it may be challenging for them to contribute as generously as they have in years past. So, if you have goods or services that others may be interested in bidding on, please contact rpatoile@douglas.co.us to discuss.
